I woke up this morning with a stuffed up nose. Not an unusual thing, but today it was the beginning of a very bad moment. I am not a reasonable person at 2:30 in the morning, so when my pup was at the door whimpering I snapped at him to go back to bed. Not smart. I should have listened. When I woke up this morning, with my stuffed up nose not smelling the evil below, swung my feet out of bed and landed directly in a pile of…eewwww. Of course I slid a bit and was dangling over it, elbows on the bed, feet far out in front, trying very had to get myself back up so as not to land on it. It’s not right funny now, but maybe later I will laugh a little. Very little. Ha
THEN LIKE THE BLIND MAN: Orbie’s Story

Genre: Coming of Age | Historical Fiction

A storm is brewing in the all-but-forgotten backcountry of Kentucky. And, for young Orbie Ray, the swirling heavens may just have the power to tear open his family’s darkest secrets. Then Like The Blind Man: Orbie’s Story is the enthralling debut novel by Freddie Owens, which tells the story of a spirited wunderkind in the segregated South of the 1950s and the forces he must overcome to restore order in his world.Rich in authentic vernacular and evocative of a time and place long past, this absorbing work of magical realism offered up with a Southern twist will engage readers who relish the Southern literary canon, or any tale well told.
Nine-year-old Orbie already has his cross to bear. After the sudden death of his father, his mother Ruby has off and married his father’s coworker and friend Victor, a slick-talking man with a snake tattoo. Since the marriage, Orbie, his sister Missy, and his mother haven’t had a peaceful moment with the heavy-drinking, fitful new man of the house. Orbie hates his stepfather more than he can stand; this fact lands him at his grandparents’ place in Harlan’s Crossroads, Kentucky, when Victor decides to move the family to Florida without including him. In his new surroundings, Orbie finds little to distract him from Granpaw’s ornery ways and constant teasing jokes about snakes.
As Orbie grudgingly adjusts to life with his doting Granny and carping Granpaw, who are a bit too keen on their black neighbors for Orbie’s taste, not to mention their Pentecostal congregation of snake handlers, he finds his world views changing, particularly when it comes to matters of race, religion, and the true cause of his father’s death. He befriends a boy named Willis, who shares his love of art, but not his skin color. And, when Orbie crosses paths with the black Choctaw preacher, Moses Mashbone, he learns of a power that could expose and defeat his enemies, but can’t be used for revenge. When a storm of unusual magnitude descends, he happens upon the solution to a paradox that is both magical and ordinary. The question is, will it be enough?

PRESCHOOL BOOKS: Teach your children to read an easy written word: ELF! (2-5 years old)
This Picture Book in the “Kids Reading!” Series is inspired by Dr. Doman Glenn’s book “How to Teach Your Baby to Read: The Gentle Revolution” and it is designed to help your children explore words and language with their first steps into reading.
The humorous illustrations will delight them, as with any other picture books, but they will soon begin to associate the images with the written words.
According to Dr. G. Doman, very young children can read, providing the letters are big enough for them to see the difference between them. Dr. Doman also explains that it is easier to teach a baby to read a whole word, rather than teaching separate letters, because single letters are a concept a child cannot understand.
This Picture Book aims therefore to make your children get used to a whole word, not individual letters. It encourages them to recognize their first written word: ELF.
The main word ELF is taught with a combination of cute illustrations and text which will bring a big smile on your child’s face.

Kissing Outside the Lines: A True Story of Love and Race and Happily Ever After
Diane Farr
(37 Reviews)
Genre: Politics & Social Sciences | Health, Fitness & Dieting | Biographies & Memoirs | Parenting & Relationships
Diane Farr—Numb3rs star, Loveline veteran, and FunnyorDie.com contributor—always took for granted that she could love anybody she chose. But when she, a white woman, fell in love with a Korean-American man, she quickly learned a tough lesson: When it comes to navigating the landscape of interracial love in America today . . .you’re going to step on some landmines.
At turns introspective and outrageous, Kissing Outside the Lines is Farr’s unapologetic—often hilarious—look at the complexities of interracial/ethnic/religious/what-have-you love, told through the lens of her own experience of dating, marrying, and creating a family with someone from a race and culture different from her own. Along the way, she exposes the many ways in which prejudice rears its ugly head—whether subtly or overtly—when you dare to love “outside the lines,” and she shares the stories of other multiracial couples from different corners of the U.S. who have made a similar leap.
Kissing Outside the Lines tackles love, family, and prejudice head-on. With sharp wit and deft humor, Farr confronts the fears and reservations that come with loving outside of one’s race, and she emerges with a powerful message: Love is love and family is family—no matter what it looks like from the outside.
Kissing Outside the Lines also includes an 8-page black and white photo signature.
