Was I complaining to Mother Nature that we weren’t getting enough sunshine. Oh dear..my bad. She certainly has been making up for the lack of sunshine at the end of the baby basset’s school year now with a good amount of sun and heat. I have been moving as slow as a snowman in summer, which is funny because I am just as pale as a snowman. I won’t let a little heat stop my poor hubby from working on my chicken coop (how brave of me). I follow him around with an umbrella and water just to keep progress moving forward. I do it for the chickens.

Last Plane Out of Saigon
Richard Pena
(84 Reviews)
Genre: History
FREE for a limited time
In 1973, sixty-one days after the Paris Peace Accords was signed specifying that American troops must withdraw from Vietnam — one day beyond the terms of the agreement — Richard Pena, was among the final handful of Americans to leave the country.
LAST PLANE OUT OF SAIGON is a faithful reproduction of the journal he kept as a draftee working in the operating room of Vietnam’s largest military hospital during the final year of the war. Supporting historical and political context is provided by award-winning scholar, John Hagan. Richard’s entries were written in real time and, as they chronicle the last desperate year of this tragic war, present readers with a better understanding of the complicated final year of the Vietnam War from the inside, looking out. A year that tragically remains unfamiliar to most Americans. This landmark book describes, in part, the hasty departure of American troops from Vietnam but is timely now as America again withdraws from war and is challenged with multiple global conflicts. It is a gripping real-time account of the anger, resistance and resilience forged in one man by the horrors of Vietnam witnessed up close, in graphically human terms, touching on mistakes that were made then and which our country continues to make today. The reader will feel the weight of this compelling account, as the Vietnam War continues to plague the consciousness of our country. All Americans should read this important piece of history, bound to leave them with chills.

For more than seventeen years with the U.S. Marshals Service, DEA, and Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Jim Born has seen just about everything Florida crime and criminals can throw at him, and he’s put it all into as entertaining and accomplished a first thriller as you’ll find anywhere this year. State cop Bill Tasker has had problems in the past, but nothing compared to what’s about to happen to him. A satchel with a million and a half in skimmed money is about to go walking. A phony community activist has decided to cash in, but a local FBI agent also has his eyes on the prize, a key witness gets murdered, and it’s Tasker who ends up framed for the whole thing. Soon, other people become seduced by the cash as well, and as the bag passes from hand to hand and the body count mounts, Tasker realizes it’s all up to him. If he doesn’t retake his life right now… someone’s going to do it for him. Filled with a rich array of characters, a constantly twisting plot, and an authenticity so deep you can’t help wondering how much of this is actually true, Walking Money is indeed proof that “Jim Born is the real thing.”
