I got my hands on a power washer yesterday and things got a little out of hand. I just needed the power washer for the railing on the deck, and it made quick work of that. Suddenly, with the weather still pretty hot in the evening and the sun still out, I realized that everything around my house was filthy. Everything. I was power washing everything that wasn’t a living creature. There were cobwebs and dirt flying everywhere. I began to wonder how I could have possibly lived all this time in such filth. It was so addicting I was trying to figure out how I could use it in the house. I am sure this awesome little machine could do some amazing things to this hard water stains in the bathroom. My poor baby basset was so confused. Why on earth was his mom having so much fun cleaning. Adulthood must be horrible. Poor poor adults.

In 1984 a doomsday vault was constructed on a remote island in the Arctic Ocean. Its purpose was to preserve Earth’s genetic history in the event of a global catastrophe. Now, decades later, a second vault has been uncovered. This one resting where no one ever expected. And the problem is… it’s not ours. Yet even more curious than the vault itself, is what lies inside. Seeds. Millions of seeds. Each with a genetic embryo untouched and perfectly preserved. Waiting. No one knows who built it. Or when. What we have managed to figure out is that whoever it was traveled an immense distance. For the sole purpose of hiding their genetic blueprints on Earth. But why? Now a small group of marine biologists and navy investigators have been assigned to find out. Before anyone else does. But Alison Shaw and John Clay are not prepared for what they are about to uncover. Beginning with the truth behind our own evolution.

“… I fear I have been killed because of what happened today at Swains Lock.” So begins the dried-out note that Vin Illick finds while scavenging planks from an abandoned shed near the old Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. It’s signed by canal-hand Lee Fisher and dated 1924. Vin reads on: “I may be buried along with the others at the base of three joined sycamores… one tree leads to the money, the second leads to the killers and the third leads to the dead. In your search for me you may find the truth. Be careful you don’t share my fate.” Vin should be finishing his software consulting project and looking for a full-time job — that was the plan when he and his fiancee Nicky relocated to Maryland so she could start work as a veterinarian. But to Nicky’s chagrin, Vin becomes determined to find Lee Fisher’s joined sycamores. Was Lee killed and buried along with the others? What about the money? And what happened at Swains Lock? Following threads in the note, Vin finds fresh clues that seem intended for him. His investigation turns life-threatening in the woods, and he suspects a young widow associated with two accidental deaths is stalking his search. As Vin closes in on the sycamores, his obsession with “Lee Fisher’s truth” may cost him his relationship with Nicky, but calling it off may cost him his life. Because the past that Vin pursues is also pursuing him, and a confrontation with destiny and vengeance awaits him at Swains Lock.

Confessions of an Unlikely Runner: A Guide to Racing and Obstacle Courses for the Averagely Fit and Halfway Dedicated
Dana L. Ayers
(202 Reviews)
Genre: Sports & Outdoors | Health, Fitness & Dieting
FREE for a limited time
Witty, observant, and full of cringe-worthy confessions and heartwarming encouragement, Confessions celebrates both running and life. Part Bridget Jones, part Forrest Gump, Dana Ayers chronicles her awkward mishaps and adventures in transitioning from childhood bookworm to accidental accomplished athlete. Over the last ten years, Ayers has completed a vast array of races. She runs them all while admittedly not getting much faster, much thinner, or much more disciplined — though she has managed to be on national television, split open her pants, and get electrocuted. Ayers intersperses her hilarious yet relatable struggles with insights about how and why she keeps running. A self-proclaimed ambassador of slow runners, Ayers has completed dozens of endurance challenges, including Tough Mudder, the Ragnar Relay, Muddy Buddy, Warrior Dash, Run Amuck, the Army Ten-Miler, the Country Music Marathon, and many more mud runs, obstacles courses, and races. Her race descriptions will entertain seasoned runners and non-runners alike. Woven into the chaos of her running adventures is compassionate reassurance for anyone who feels like they aren’t fast enough, athletic enough, or strong enough to finish a tough race. Though told with humor, Confessions’ stories share an underlying theme of Ayers’ serious reverence for the sport of running and the running community. Ayers describes experiences such as participating in a 1,000-mile relay for Boston Marathon bombing victims, and being overcome by emotion while observing wounded veterans struggling to finish a race. Her stories prove how life-enriching it can be to physically fight for something and to cheer on others who are doing the same. For anyone who has considered trying a marathon, an obstacle race, or simply taking up running for the first time, Ayers is your ambassador. If she can do it, you can too.
