Watching the movie Back to The Future with my baby bassets last night was quite the shock. First let me just say, that movie really was awesome. My kids were on the edge of their seats when Doc was hanging from the clock tower and lightning was just about to strike. My oldest jumped up and screamed, “He’s never gonna make it!!” For a second I had my doubts as well. Those outfits though! Oh NO NO NO!!! I remember when the movie first came out and I thought everyone looked so cool, and normal. They didn’t look ridiculous at all. The 80’s have got to be one of the most awful decades of style ever! So much peach colored icky. How did we all not notice that Michael J fox’s pants were buttoned half way up his chest? How did he even bend over? How did any of us bend over?

Gray Shadows (Russian Historical Mysteries Book 1)

When Nikolai Volkov finished his military service in Chechnya, he expected a calm civilian life. But life in post-Soviet Moscow was more turbulent than he had ever experienced outside a war zone.
With the new business opportunities brought about by the budding Russian democracy, Moscow saw an unprecedented spike in violent crime. From car bombs exploding in the middle of a busy street in broad daylight to shoot-outs between competitors to murders for political motives, Moscow was nothing but calm.
As Nikolai looked for a way to fit into this new life, he discovered that the new risks and dangers brought with them an urgent need for a new paramilitary profession of a bodyguard. When he had first heard the term, Nikolai’s mind conjured up a movie image of a tough muscular guy in a leather jacket, armed to his teeth and ready to use his body to shield his client.
That image, like many of Nikolai’s other perceptions of the new Russian life, was wrong.
“You’ve been watching too many action movies,” a bodyguard friend told Nikolai.
“Isn’t that the kind of bodyguard we’re used to seeing?” Nikolai asked.
“Seeing,” his friend replied, “is the problem. Real bodyguards are gray shadows, unseen, unheard, and unnoticed. Professional bodyguards are both warriors and investigators, investigating the crimes before they get committed.”
After a few months of bodyguard training and a job offer, Nikolai quickly became one of the best bodyguards in the prestigious Centurion Personal Protection agency.
In Gray Shadows, the mystery starts as Nikolai is assigned to a new client, a young attractive woman, and travels to a small town north of Siberia to provide protection for her, on her dad’s request. At first, both Nikolai and his boss see the assignment as a whim of a rich overprotective father.
But the more Nikolai learns about the small town, the oil company that the young woman is working for, and the people involved, the deeper the mystery gets. As he investigates a series of suspicious events, he encounters secrets, lies, and threats. In an unexpected and frightening twist, Nikolai’s easy assignment becomes one of the toughest and the most dangerous.
Gray Shadows is a modern suspense thriller set in post-Soviet Russia that presents a glimpse into Russian life of the turbulent 1990’s, when the birth of a democracy was accompanied by violent collisions of political, social, and economic forces that made daily life in Moscow dangerous and unpredictable.

She’s cut all ties with her past as a former model whose ex-husband turned out to be ruthless in both the boardroom and the bedroom. While Alexandra allowed other’s expectations to propel her into the spotlight, Lauren prefers the safety of anonymity; restoring classic cars with her brother, and snuggling with her four-year-old son.

Always on the move, Nate is only comfortable with short-term assignments and even shorter-term relationships. But it’s not just his buyer’s tight deadline or that the restoration is far beyond his expertise which turns a short-term project into an ordeal. The Eighties: A Bitchen Time To Be a Teenager!
by Tom Harvey
(136 Reviews)
Genre: Humor & Entertainment | Biographies & Memoirs | Teen & Young Adult
FREE for a limited time
The decade of the 1980s has been called the Decade of Decadence. Decadence is defined as “the act or process of falling into an inferior condition or state; deterioration; decay” or my favorite, “unrestrained or excessive self-indulgence.” For a decade that brought us Cabbage Patch Kids, Garbage Pail Kids, leg-warmers and New Wave, was it really self-indulgence?! For one kid growing up in the Central Valley of California, it was a time of self-discovery… a transformation from a kid, to a teenager, to a young adult… his growing up years. At times utterly hilarious, at times poignant and powerful, Tom relives his teenage years in this true-to-the-last-word memoir. Where were you when John Lennon died? When the Space Shuttle blew up? When Lawrence Taylor ended Joe Theisman’s career on live TV? When the Loma Prieta earthquake rocked Game 3 of the 1989 World Series? Tom will tell you where he was and what it meant to him. You’ll also hear about first kisses, first loves, a joke about your Uranus, avoiding fistfights, the joys of minimum-wage jobs, college roommates, and WHOLE LOT MORE. If you’re one of the 70 million Americans who can claim at least one teen year in the decade, you can relate to the era… if your kids can’t understand your fondness for your Breakfast Club and Princess Bride DVDs, this book may teach them a thing or two about YOUR growing up years. Go ahead, say the word “bitchen” outloud. Yeah, it was a bitchen time, the Eighties… (and, yeah, the word can be spelled “bitchen” or “bitchin'” – the author prefers the former… )
