My oldest basset just came up to me, grabbed both my shoulders, looked me straight in the eyes, and very seriously told me I needed to finish decorating the house for Christmas. Whoa! He is very very concerned about this. Mind you, I have every room in this house decorated. Well… not my bedroom. I need some escape from the holiday craziness, but the rest of the house is screaming holiday cheer. He went on to list the exact decorations that I hadn’t put up yet, which seems to be about another three hours worth of work. I thought I was done (whimpering a bit inside)! I cant let him down though. He loves the Christmas season and all it’s magic and by golly I want to keep it that way as long as possible. I have only had one cup of coffee so far, and I am using that to write this post, which I was almost going to be late on because I was getting hooked on a Hallmark Original Movie this morning. It was Operation Christmas… love it! I ripped myself away from it and it is currently taping. I will use my second cup of coffee to finish decorating. The noon post will just have to be a hot cocoa with marshmallows.

Fat Chance
by R.J. Leahy

Sean McDermott is a private detective in New York City, it says so right on his business card. It’s an ok job, but it isn’t as exciting as most people think, and that’s fine by him. He makes it a rule not to get involved in active police cases or in any case where people are likely to get hurt–especially him. So why does the mob suddenly want him dead? Sure it’s all a mistake, but dead from a mistake is still dead.

Taking advice from his friend, the Juke, he starts on a cross country drive to LA (what can I tell you, he has a few phobias, and flying is just one of them), where he figures he’ll be safe and makes it as far as Mystic Falls, New Mexico before the borrowed Mercedes conks out. Mystic Falls? Think Green Acres–without the sophistication.

It should have been easy. All he had to do was lie low and wait for the car to be fixed. A good plan too, if only the local “character” hadn’t turned up missing with him fingered as the prime suspect. Now if he ever wants to get out of this sleepy desert asylum before the mob finds him, he’s going to have to find her. Simple? Fat chance.

The concept of Constant Vigilance has more relevance today than at any time in the history of the United States or in the history of Mankind. Not only do we need to guard our liberty from the abuse of the power and authority that we have granted to our government, we also need to guard against the abuse of power garnered by multinational corporations.
The story examines events from the past and interprets these events in a light that leads to the conclusion that the future of mankind is under threat. In the final analysis, the road less traveled may be the only option left.
