Yesterday I dedicated the whole day to cleaning out four bee boxes of colonies we had lost. I wanted to be extra sure there was no disease left behind so I used bleach on some items and a heat gun on other. I also wanted to be sure I killed any wax moth eggs that might have been left behind. I had no idea that would take me all day and just about break my body. I am happy that I can do a few of the needed repairs and adjustments with the boxes vacant, but this is a lot of work for a couple of not so successful beekeepers. I know beekeepers lose colonies all the time, and this year was especially harsh with the smoke from the fires, but it doesn’t make it easier. I just have to keep my chin up and prepare for next Spring. I think making a few changes suggested by my mentor, and having the bee boxes already set up and ready for swarm season, rather than running around slapping boxes together quickly, will make it a lot easier. Yes.. think positively! I really need to think positively because I have six more boxes to clean. UGH!
