The only reason I had not taken out the milkweed in my yard was because I was working my way from the side yard to the back and I just hadn’t gotten there yet. I had given up on Monarchs coming back to my yard and since the milkweed is filled with aphids and Asian beetles I was very much looking forward to pulling the plants out. It looks really nasty. But last night I was hanging out in the backyard with hubby, enjoying the last few hours of the weekend when I spotted one. Chomping away on a nasty, aphid infested leaf was a cute little Monarch caterpillar. I was shocked! I have been searching for caterpillars for weeks and found nothing. At last count I spotted 7 total. I am thrilled about it, really. But I really hate the milkweed. The plant itself is fine, but the amount of nasty bugs and what I think is their poop, makes for an ugly summer garden. When I thought the Monarchs were not coming back I was a bit relieved. I thought I would give up and plant flowers that weren’t a heaven for aphids. I gotta think about this for a while. In the meantime I am going to enjoy the little cuties I found.
