I made the announcement Sunday night, that we were decorating the tree Monday night. Everyone acknowledged and agreed. They even showed a little enthusiasm. I was relieved that the tree would finally be decorated. It was going to look so nice. Now fast forward to 8pm last night. So how does the tree look all decorated? It doesn’t. No one had time to do it. Erg. Now that I have had a few days to look at it with just the lights, I see there is a huge hole where there are no lights. The whole center strand of lights had gone out. Hubby went out and bought a new strand and replaced it, but he tried so hard to blend the lights (that are not the same white as the ones that came with the pre-light fake tree) with the top and bottom sections of lights that there are huge holes in the middle. Erg. I keep daydreaming of throwing that tree off a cliff. I know that’s not the Christmas spirit, but that tree is giving me some stress. Wait.. no… the tree is annoying the padoodle out of me. I’m not buying a new tree. That …tree… will bring me joy if I have to throw it in the street and run over it with my car to show it who is boss. Totally rational reaction to a tree. Totally.

What do we give away when we click “I AGREE” to the terms of service on our phones? · Why are the billionaires squirrelling away all that money? · Why do old photographs and songs seem to refer to a history we can’t remember? · Why do professional sports teams need new stadiums so often? · And why is everyone so depressed? These are just a few mysteries that Ms. Never – a new science-fiction novel by Colin Dodds – takes on (and possibly answers) in startling fashion.
Farya Navurian seems like an ordinary young woman trying to get ahead in the city while struggling with depression. But her depression is anything but ordinary – it has the power to destroy time and space. Growing up the moody daughter of a space-faring hero of The Greater Anointed Imperial Ohioan Commonwealth, Farya annihilated most of that world and its history, leaving behind the husk-like Buckeye State. One day at a record swap, she meets Bryan, a divorced telecom CEO. More than record collecting, what they share is that they each carry a howling secret. Bryan’s business is a cover for a bigger operation that buys human souls and sells luxury afterlives using shady terms of service in mobile-phone contracts. The two of them fall in love, and as they start a life together, their secrets back them into a corner where they have to come clean – and take drastic steps – to save themselves, and possibly reality itself. Ms. Never is a distinctly 21st-century vision of consent, memory, and the ways we create and destroy the world every day.

Fire in the Fjord (Charles Dollimore Book 2)
by M. C. Smith
(206 Reviews)
Genre: War | Historical Fiction
FREE for a limited time
It is February 1940 – just six months since Britain declared war on Germany.
Hitler has set his sights on neutral Norway and its precious iron ore he needs to feed his voracious war machine. Control of Norwegian waters by Hitler’s forces would make breaking the Allied blockade of Germany a little easier. Risky – Britain’s Senior Service still rules the waves. His secret weapon – German air power, especially the fiendish dive-bomber, the Stuka.
British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain is under mounting pressure for continuing in his belief that a peaceful solution is possible. His First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, knows otherwise.
And so does Captain Charles Dollimore, who has command of HMS Burscombe, one of the most powerful cruisers in the British fleet, yet he is having problems with his immediate superior, Rear-Admiral Nicklesworth, ¬who resents his decisiveness and intuitive grasp of the situation.
Rank and tradition is everything in the Royal Navy. But it can bring a kitbag full of problems for the families whose men dedicate their lives to the service. Charles’ son Philip, living in the shadow of his father’s high reputation, has raised eyebrows over his temperament under duress. He has a weakness for drink – and problems on the women front to boot. His career has been knocked back by the irascible Captain Vian aboard HMS Cossack and has been posted to a desk job in London.
And more of the same for Midshipman David Clark, born into a family that have, for over two hundred years, been producing successful officers for the Royal Navy. He was never interested in serving but has no choice. It is a recipe for trouble.
There is trouble everywhere, it seems, even with those for whom the navy offers escape from more dubious or inferior origins. The war just makes the trouble worse.
