I don’t know what it is about August, but this month puts me in the mood for the holidays. Yesterday I took the baby bassets to Target to get some back to school supplies, and we found ourselves in the Lego section. A lot of new sets were out and I was taking pictures of all the ones they wanted for Christmas. I do that every year. I take pictures of the boys with the gift they would want so I can add it to their Christmas list. Makes it easier than writing it down because I always lose the list. By December I have multiple incomplete Christmas lists hidden in multiple drawers around the house. So annoying! It’s a little weird that I was picking out a few sets for myself, when I haven’t even completed the ones I got last year. Will that stop me from asking Santa for new ones this year? NOPE!

Seabiscuit and Secretariat: The History of America’s Most Famous Horses
by Charles River Editors
(70 Reviews)
Genre: History | Biographies & Memoirs
FREE for a limited time
Americans have always loved animals, and those living prior to World War II were still close enough to their pioneer roots to feel a special affection for horses. After all, it was these noble animals that had carried soldiers and pulled plows and milk wagons alike. A horse was more than just a pet; it was a partner in the fight for survival. Just as many Americans had known special, unforgettable individuals, so they had known special horses.
Seabiscuit was one of these, and even the animal’s name spoke to the heart of those struggling. A sea biscuit was a piece bread baked for so long in such a low oven that it was completely dry and would never mold. It was so tough that it had to be soaked in water, sometimes even rainwater, before it could be eaten. But it was nutritious and would allow a sailor to do his duty for one more hour, helping keep him alive until he reached a safe harbor.
