If you were to come to my house and look in my cupboards, you would see that there are two types of people who live in this house. The first is a person who can open a box of crackers or a bag of cereal cleanly and as instructed on the package to keep the food fresh for as long as possible. That would be hubby and my two baby bassets. The second type of person is the one who obviously has no self control, coordination, or patience. Basically it looks like a racoon got to the packaging and the food has no chance of staying fresh. That’s me. I am the racoon, and it drives hubby nuts. This morning I tried my best to open his box of bran flakes properly. I really really tried, but after a way too long five seconds I gave up. I don’t exactly remember what took place after the five seconds had past, but the pups are enjoying bran flakes off the floor.

The Ashenby Incident (The Ashenby Trilogy Book 1)
by D. M. Mitchell
(147 Reviews)
Genre: Horror | Thrillers | Psychological
FREE for a limited time
In the first of D. M. Mitchell’s powerful trilogy, a ninety-five-year-old man makes his way into the main offices of The London Gazetteer, a popular newspaper, with an appointment to see Nicholas Harvey, the chief editor. The old man, Ronald Seaton, has a book with him – The Ashenby Incident – written by Nicholas Harvey a number of years ago. It concerns the mysterious bombing of the small East Coast Yorkshire village in 1944, an incident which wiped out most of the village’s inhabitants. But Harvey isn’t interested in what the old man has to say. At least, not until the pensioner reveals he has a bomb strapped to his chest and will detonate it if Harvey doesn’t listen.
The building is evacuated and Harvey is forced to listen to the old man, who reveals as a young soldier he was stationed in Ashenby in 1944, and what’s more personally witnessed a government cover-up of monstrous proportions. He tells of a plane crash – a plane carrying a strange and deadly cargo – and how, over two horror-filled days and nights, the results of that crash changed Ashenby and his world forever.
Chief Inspector Blake is summoned to the hostage-crisis in the Gazetteer building. But as the day unfolds the police officer begins to suspect everything is not what it seems as his own beliefs, caught up in the swift-moving events, are gradually changed, forcing him eventually to do the unthinkable.

THE GIRL FROM COLOMBIA
by Julian Rodriguez
(193 Reviews)
Genre: Literature & Fiction
FREE for a limited time
In 19th century New Jersey, a cold, cruel beast of a man plots an arranged marriage for his son… but the boy’s relationship with a mysterious foreign girl threatens everything.
New Jersey. 1890. Joseph Johnson arrives from London to see the property that his wealthy industrialist father, Samuel, has developed on the American coast. Riding through the dunes, the 19-year-old comes across a two-room cabin that houses his father’s 18-year-old adopted daughter, Isabel. Before this visit, Joseph knew nothing about the young woman, whom his father apparently saved from drowning off the coast of Colombia when she was small. To be fair, Joseph knows almost nothing about Samuel, either, as the man left him back in England to be raised by a nurse; his mother “disappeared.” Samuel now expects Joseph to marry Elizabeth Edwards, the beautiful daughter of a local doctor. Joseph likes Elizabeth, but he can’t get his mind off the mysterious Isabel, who everyone claims has a fatal disease. Nor does he know that Isabel almost succeeded in poisoning Samuel to death when she was younger. Isabel is anything but welcoming, but as she and Joseph get to know each other, long-held secrets threaten to come to light.
This is a dark, foreboding Victorian tale, with an arranged marriage, a mysterious character in Isabel, and enough intrigue to keep this a fast paced read while conveying the tenor and culture of the times. Simply brilliant.
