When I was in my early twenties, I lived on the second floor of an apartment building. It was during a heat wave that I had the brilliant idea to buy a plastic kiddie pool, put it in my living room, and fill it full of water from the hose outside. It took a few tries to throw the nozzle to the second floor balcony, but I got the job done. The neighbors saw what I was doing. They didn’t say anything. They just kept on singing karaoke in the front yard with their never ending garage sale. I’m not sure if the karaoke machine was for sale or not. If it was, it must have been too expensive because they had it all summer. I put the nozzle in the pool, walked downstairs, turned on the hose and ran upstairs to watch the pool fill with water. It didn’t take that long to fill. Nice. When it was just about 3/4 full, I ran downstairs and turned the water off. The karaoke singers still going strong. I remember the guy, who spent all day sitting in his car, asked me what I was up to. I don’t recall exactly what I said, but he was satisfied with my answer and the conversation quickly ended. Soon after I was cooling off from the heat in the kiddie pool in my living room. Good times.

An Internet influencer and her boyfriend are brutally killed in their home in Los Angeles, and homicide detective Casey Stafford is under pressure by the LAPD and the news media to catch the disturbed killer — even as he desperately murders more people to cover his tracks.

It appears that their suspect is killing any potential witnesses, and each murder is more disturbing and out of control than the last.

The investigation leads Casey and his partner, Banchet, to a Chinese gang, a Mexican hitman, the FBI, a million dollars in stolen gold, and a leak in the LAPD itself, and with each murder, media interest in the case grows until the entire nation is watching.

Casey needs to stop the deranged murderer before he kills again, and he needs to do it before he is taken off the case by his commanding officers.

With Prior’s “crackling prose and relentless pacing,” each book in the Casey Stafford Series is filled with action, torn-from-the-headlines criminals, authentic LAPD police procedural details, and Casey’s joy in getting justice for his victims and just being a good cop.

With the adoration of the people already in the palm of her hands, Lystra is the ideal candidate. But even if she doesn’t spurn him for his ruinous curse, he’ll need to protect her from its dangers — and his heart as he finds himself steadily drawn to the girl’s unbreakable spirit. With death on the horizon, Elerek must become the king he never planned to be and save Instanolde before his time runs out.

Lystra and Elerek only have one summer to prepare their kingdom for invasion, but more than one threat prowls their desert, and the cost of survival might just destroy them all.
