It’s cookie baking time. These are the cookies that I bake with my baby bassets, that I don’t hand out to my friends and family. I gotta be honest. If people give me cookies or treats and they tell me their kid helped make them…. I thank them, but there is no why in heckadoodle I will eat them. I have seen what my kids do when they bake, and the secret ingredient isn’t love. Just saying. Don’t get me wrong. Not all kids are germy and booger filled, but the odds are pretty high that at least one time during the baking they snuck something in. And you just try to tell me as parents or caregivers that after you have mixed just about all the ingredients together and your sweet little child sneezes right at the bowl, you are going to throw that whole batch out? My friends can rest easy, those batches I save for just the kids to eat and then I turn the TV on and make a new batch by myself for my friends. I even tell my friends that no kids were used in the baking of these cookies and I mean it.

Burned out and bitter after a string of disappointments, Nicola Strozyk takes a short-term gig assisting Laurie Sparks, the design world’s reigning enfant terrible. Barely in his twenties, Laurie has built himself an empire that encompasses a chic Manhattan boutique and a role on an obnoxious reality series. Part worldly sophisticate and part cheerful scatterbrain, Laurie is beautiful and extravagant; at nearly twice his age, Nicola is jaded and resolutely unglamorous. As Laurie’s burgeoning fame threatens to overwhelm him, Nicola finds herself struggling to keep him on solid ground. When Laurie becomes obsessed with tracking down the designer of a mysterious coat, he drags Nicola along on a champagne-fueled quest that takes them from the New York catwalks to glittery Hollywood parties and swanky suites in Paris hotels. What begins as a lark takes an ominous turn when they uncover a decades-old mystery involving the murders of two young models. Along the way, the odd-couple camaraderie between Nicola and Laurie evolves into a fierce bond, which is put to the test when she must protect him from a pair of deadly threats: a mercurial fellow designer hell-bent on burying a dark secret, and an obsessive killer who has fixed his sights on Laurie.

Kadmus Armstrong lives in a small town at the northeastern tip of the Wolfpack Mountains, happily waning his days away with his father in the forge that they share. As members of the clan of Gilgal, they don’t really have to worry about the war that has been sitting on their front lawn since High King Tharantus was murdered. It’s not their men that are dying, their crops that are burning, or really their problem. So Kadmus enjoys visiting his elder brother, hunting with his younger brother, and simply bringing his blacksmith’s hammer crashing down on a white-hot piece of metal. But what if it does become their problem? Kadmus is forced to answer this question in the dead of night when suddenly his father hands him a sword and yells something about a bandit raid. Within minutes, however, it becomes harshly obvious that this is no mere bandit raid. Being a blacksmith by trade, and hardly one for getting out of his box, Kadmus chooses to wield the weapon with which he is most experienced: a hammer. Thus begins the epic journey, twisted with love and blood, of Kadmus Armstrong, Trollslayer, Shipwrecker, Forger of Fire. They say there is one that cannot be defeated. One that can withstand any blow and return it without remorse. One who burns across the battlefield as a beast of old. He is the one, they say, who fights like a dragon. Dragonhammer.

Set in 1880s Nebraska, Paint the Hills Red is a story of men — and women — who won’t back down… even when it looks as though they should.
