This morning feels more like the first day of the year. Back to the regular routine, and no more cake. It’s raining as well if those first two things weren’t enough to put a damper on your day. You know what would brighten up things? Staying home from school and blowing off work and eating cake! I’m an adult right? I can make these calls! No? Darn it! Might as well go eat something healthy while I am at it. Harumph!

How Do You Know?
Meredith Schorr
(89 Reviews)
Genre: Women’s Fiction | Coming of Age | Contemporary Fiction
FREE for a limited time
Life doesn’t happen on a schedule, there are no deadlines in love, and age is just a number. On the eve of her thirty-ninth birthday, Maggie Piper doesn’t look, act, or feel much different than she did at twenty-nine, but with her fortieth birthday speeding toward her like a freight train, she wonders if she should. The fear of a slowing metabolism, wrinkling of her skin, and the ticking of her biological clock leaves Maggie torn between a desire to settle down like most of her similarly aged peers and concern that all is not perfect in her existing relationship. When a spontaneous request for a temporary “break” from her live-in boyfriend results in a “break-up,” Maggie finds herself single once again and only twelve months from the big 4.0. As Maggie reenters the New York City dating jungle, suitors present themselves quickly, but who is “The One?” Is he a sexy coworker, one of many bachelors at a speed-dating event, or is he the man she already set free? How do you know? Her fun-loving friends and supportive family, including meddlesome “no-filter” Aunt Helen, eagerly share their (often unsolicited) opinions, but Maggie is determined to find her own way, even if she falls on her face — repeatedly.

An “Awesome Indie” short story… Have you ever lost a beloved pet? Have you grieved and mourned yet still feel empty? May the road to Zellwood help you find an end to that sad journey. *Note: Albeit quite poignant, please be aware this is a very short story. However, I hope you find the message within as cathartic as it was for me when I wrote it…
EXCERPT: Smack in the center of the state, there sits a small town whose only claim to fame is spring-bottled water and an annual corn festival. It is a blink-of-the-eye beautiful burg with gently sloping hills and towering oaks laden with silvery, spidery Spanish moss. Boasting few traffic lights, it nevertheless has one spectacular pet cemetery. Zellwood. Rarely does one go there on purpose. But since I have one – though some might say it’s silly – I’m going. For somewhere in that tiny town, an old dog named Jake is buried…
