Yesterday’s hive inspections went pretty good. I wasn’t expecting to as happy with the results as I was. A few of the colonies that I thought were too small, and wasn’t expecting much from, turned out to impress me. They had brood, so the queen was there and laying eggs, they were building fresh comb, and there were many foragers coming in with pollen. Everything that you wanted to see the swarms you caught doing. The only colony that I was disappointed in was the one I have in my yard that I named Napa. The boxes she is in are very old and are hard to find. When my partner in crime and I opened up the boxes to move them to newer boxes, we quickly learned that the comb they had build was such a tangled mess, killing the queen would have been a real possibility. If not that, it would have been hours of work, a huge mess, and a lot of dead brood. Instead we decided to make a makeshift piece so that we could add a regular size box on top. The idea would be they would move into that box so I can harvest honey from them, but they haven’t been moving into it. This means no honey. This also means I might just have to go back to the original plan of moving them into a new box and risking losing the colony. Do I have the bees just to have bees, but no honey. Or do I risk losing the colony completely and move them? I have no clue.
