I feared  the day I would be a ripe blueberry, but the day came despite my prayers. They picked me quick and harshly off the bush along with my brothers and sisters and threw us into a basket like we were nothing but mindless grapes. It wasn’t long before I could smell the cheese burning at the bottom of the oven that I knew it was preheating. My only wish was that I would be part of a cake or at the very least a cupcake. No, my fate was in a pie. I hate pies. They are not dessert. They are breakfast. I awoke to my next life. I was a chocolate bar. Now we are talking!! Yay!

Within every person lies the power to change one world. Within Flora lies the hope for two.

In the isolated rural valley of Terrene, where technology is grown, not manufactured, Flora Karachi paints her anguish with flowers and yearns to travel outside the mountain walls that guard her village. But in a society which values harmony and symmetry above all else, her dangerous curiosity and her indelicate scars, earned from a lifetime of inexplicable blackouts, make her an outcast with few prospects for adventure.

Then the dreams come. Lucid and overpowering, they throw Flora into a fascinatingly advanced world where she lives the life of Jane Ingram, an American scientist fighting global climate change while trying to raise a child in a society where interpersonal interaction is becoming obsolete. Flora’s blackouts open a window into knowledge lost long ago and possibilities that are yet to come. To unravel these mysteries, she must travel to the enigmatic Institute, an ancient enclave hidden in the surrounding mountains, where scholars guard the secrets of Terrene.

Living two lives, Flora will fight to become an Institute scholar in her own world while struggling to save the planet from humanity’s neglect in Jane’s. Yet all of Flora’s courage combined with all of Jane’s experience may not be enough to defeat the powerful forces protecting the secret which ties their two worlds together. To find salvation for both worlds, Jane and Flora must sacrifice their own dreams, conquer their fears, and discover hope for a new beginning.

Hailed as a clever blend between science fiction and fantasy, Terrene explores the challenges of accelerating technology and global climate change through the stories of two remarkable women in two worlds that are not as distant as they seem.

Genre: Contemporary Fiction | Women’s Fiction | Romance

Heartache is the only reality Alicia knows.

But will she continue to careen self-destructively or can she learn to translate tragedy into triumph?

The debut novel, I PREFER THE SUNRISE, by Anna Rae Aberle, is a poignant, compelling story about how life’s challenges can either tear you down or lead you to triumph over adversity.

The book begins with the emotionally charged event of the loss of a baby, which at its core, provokes a journey of growth and reckoning for the semi-fictional protagonist, Alicia Riverdale. Written in Alicia’s own voice in retrospect, she takes the reader through her subsequent pain and losses in very vivid, raw detail. As Alicia flees from a destructive relationship into one marked by monumental contrasts of elation and sorrow, the reader sees the plummeting course that Alicia is headed down.

Yet, Alicia herself is blind to her own weaknesses as she cascades into her self-destructive behaviors. It is only through the influence of significant men who come to play a more integral role in her life that Alicia ultimately finds herself at a point of redemption.

But it is a hard won victory after losing her baby, her relationships, her career and her self-identity in the process. Alicia defines a new destiny for herself as she overcomes her addictive tendencies that will tether her to her past.

But, will her radical choice to start anew cause her to lose yet another crucial relationship?

I remember my circus is a moving story about a boy who has never seen a circus show. It is also about happiness, empathy and love, and introduces us to intriguing characters such as a broken-hearted gorilla-woman, and a man able to, literally, carry the world inside of him.

The book has 48 beautiful illustrations by Sidney Falcão.

In I remember my circus, the award-winning author Tom S. Figueiredo presents us with one more of his children’s stories, which does not underestimate their intelligence and perhaps, for this same reason, has equally captivated older readers.
