My oldest Basset is currently working on a new Lego set, and he was getting very upset with it. Earlier this morning I heard him yelling at it and he started crying and rubbing his face and hair in frustration. As a wise and all knowing mom, I told him he needs to take a deep breath and walk away from it for a few minutes. I told him he is probably just trying to rush it and it’s supposed to be fun, bla bla bla. He told me it wasn’t him, it was the Lego. So to teach him that it’s all about just taking a deep breath and being patient and I would build a bit of it for him and get him past the tricky part. After ten minutes I was at a level 9 anger, and a few Legos magically flew across the table. I might have even taught my baby basset a few new curse words. But I got it built. See… um… I have no lesson learned here. That was ridiculous.

Joshua

Genre: Action & Adventure

He had to keep moving, that the man instinctively knew. He had to get away, from the rioting, the lawlessness, the killing. Away from the brutal gangs that ruled the highways. Then there was the boy that he found along the way, an orphan with no place to go. He couldn’t leave the child behind; that would be murder. Together they had to make their way across the razed landscape of post collapse America, west to where there was safety, a chance to begin again. If only they survived the journey.

Excerpt: Man had quickly degenerated to the animal instincts of the species and numerous bloody examples could be seen anywhere one looked. For many there were no more limits in this new world as it had only been the law that kept them from robbing or killing or raping each other, and the law was now gone. Only anarchy remained. Rotting murdered corpses littered his street like so much uncollected garbage. The smell was something of nightmares. It was like some bad science fiction movie but all too real. If it had been a movie the man would have found it laughable and changed the channel.

Set in the south of England at the beginning of the 1980’s, White Goods is a novel about loss and the search for the truth, told through the eyes of a deceptive twelve-year-old boy.

Scot Buckley is a complex young man, living under the shadow of absence: his mother encounters a horrific death at the start of the book. Further, he is haunted by the elusive existence of a relative simply known as ‘Jackie’ – whose very being the rest of his family are determined to keep secret.

White Goods opens very dramatically: a child is pushed into the icy, open mouth of a chest freezer and the lid is slammed shut. His identity and fate are central to the story, but remain a mystery until the end.

Aside from the imprisoning chest freezer, other domestic goods participate in the drama. Scot recalls that his mother’s death is the result of a gory accident with a dishwasher. However, all is not as it initially seems and, each time Scot recalls her death, the scene and the actual cause are different…
