Searching through my cupboard for another container of frosting to attack, I realize that maybe the end of the school year for my kids might be influencing some of my dietary choices. My youngest is finishing Kindergarten and the oldest is on his way to second grade. The other parents have been a bit weepy and sentimental, but I have been day dreaming of summer vacation activities. That was the case until I saw all the kids art work taken down from the classroom walls. Time to face the music and eat a salad.

Mark Jones is a henchman for hire. He guards bunkers, patrols perimeters and stands around in a boiler suit waiting to get knocked out by Ninjas. This is his job.

He’s worked for some of the most notorious super villains the world has ever known – Doctor Thalassocrat, Victor Soliman, Polonius Crump; Mark was with each of them when they met their makers at the hands of British Secret Service super-spy, Jack Tempest and lived to tell the tale – if not pay the bills.

Still for every hour under gunfire there are weeks if not months of sitting around on monorails so Jones starts a book club with his fellow henchmen to help pass the time. It was only meant to be a bit of fun. It was never meant to save the world.

Fast forward five years, Emmalynne thinks she is broken, not only emotionally but physically as well, so her confidence was severely lacking. Inspired by a true story

Samantha Mallon, a typical young girl from the country, is growing up in a less-than-normal home. The one person she used to confide in, her brother, Charlie, has now become her biggest fear. As the tempers in her family flare, Sam must tread lightly, or suffer the consequences.

A black eye, broken nose, and bruised ego are finally enough to convince her to break away from the life that the Mallons have molded for her. Stepping out of her shy demeanor for just a moment, she sparks up a new friendship with a girl at school, and begins to enjoy being a teenager. Carefree and outgoing Jill introduces Sam into the world of teenage spirit –including the always good girl, the unattainable bad boy and the ugly jealous frienemy.

Sweating from nerves and shaking in her own insecurities, Sam manages to spark the interest of Jake, a regular teenage heartthrob, who just may teach her the meaning of love — an emotion absent from her house growing up. However, a drunken party and a physical altercation turn Sam’s world completely upside down, and begin a string of violence that starts to destroy the positive life she has tried to build.

When Sam is an innocent bystander to Charlie’s horrific display of rage on a less-than-friendly face, she remains conflicted. Will she stand up against the man she once looked up to, her brother, her childhood best friend, or will she keep the secret safe behind closed lips, forever trapped by fear?

Pursuit And Persuasion, (a 2001 Mystery Writers Of America Edgar Allan Poe Award Finalist) revolves around the secrets unearthed by Georgina Fletcher – a private, self-contained, contemplative Scotswoman, a widow, and an English professor at Aberdeen University. The day before she dies, she writes an alarming letter to her heir (the American daughter of her oldest friend) and arranges to have it posted in the event of her death.

“…I have reason to believe that my death was desired, planned and perpetrated with great care and deliberation. Even if I am right, the circumstances of my death will appear to have been brought about by natural causes…”

Georgina is anything but a fool, and it happens just as she’d feared. She’s also punctilious and ethical, and won’t name the person she suspects. Her assumptions are based on speculation, and she refuses to risk condemning any innocent person. She asks instead that her heir, Ellen Winter, hire a detective to investigate her death, free of her own prejudices.

Ellen is one of Ben Reese’s archival apprentices at Alderton University, so she knows he’s an ex-World War II Scout who’s solved other murder cases and is in Scotland on sabbatical. She’d much rather ask Ben to help than use some unknown detective.
