Each morning I wake up and check on the baby chicks, and I am thrilled to find them still alive. YAY, I am a good chicken mamma! It’s pretty easy to take care of them. I just need to be sure they have food, water , and heat. It’s not rocket science. Although things could happen, so I do not take it for granted that they are doing well. As of right now I am not sure which two I am keeping for myself and which two are going to my friends place, but I think I have come up with two names. My partner in crime came up with the first. Gertrude. I would call her Trudy. I think that is a great name. The other would be Nina. My grandmother was named Nina, but I’m not necessarily naming her after my grandmother. It just seems like a nice name for a sweet chicken.

Late in the 21st century, the United Continental States of America (or UCSA), comprising the former USA, Canada and Mexico, is running smoothly: unemployment has been all but eradicated, terrorism is quashed in the country, and internal dissent diminishes by the day. Most people thank President Meyers for this. Many can no longer remember when there was last an election, but as long as he keeps the country safe from the terrorist group Hariq Jihad (‘Fire War’), this seems a small price to pay. Gunnery Sergeant Anthony Jackson is the model Marine: highly trained, absolutely efficient, and unquestioningly dedicated to his country. The only thing he can conceive of putting before his nation is his family, his wife Courtney and two daughters Maya and MacKenzie. Conscripted into the personal security detail of President Meyers, he begins to get glimpses that not everyone is as content with the current situation as he is, but attributes this to terrorist agitation and fringe lunacy. When his older daughter Maya begins to question the creeping erosion of personal liberties and the revoking of democratic rights, however, he begins to fear for her safety, as well as his own and that of his family. In a climate in which entire families disappear due to minor offenses, one can’t be too careful. The tensions between liberty and safety, between family and country, will force Jackson to rethink all his beliefs, and lead to a collision with the system he has dedicated his life to serving. Fire War is a suspenseful, gripping and unnerving examination of the paradoxes of power, the price of liberty, and the dictates of conscience. The world you live in will never look the same again.

Can you imagine starting a journey to an unknown country in 1868, not knowing what the country would be like, where you would live, or how you would survive? Did you make the right decision to leave in the first place? This first book in the Planting Dreams series portrays Swedish immigrant Charlotta Johnson (author Linda Hubalek’s ancestor), as she ponders the decision to leave her homeland, travel to America, and worries about her family’s future in a new country. Each chapter is written as a thought-provoking story as the family travels to a new country to find a new life. Why did this family leave? Drought scorched the farmland of Sweden and there was no harvest to feed families or livestock. Taxes were due and there was little money to pay them. But there were ships sailing to America, where the government gave land to anyone who wanted to claim a homestead. Follow Charlotta and her family as they travel by ship and rail from Sweden, to their homestead on the open plains of Kansas.

4.7 Stars (45 Reviews)
Genre: Children’s eBooks

FREE for a limited time

When a mysterious fire ravages the town of Donkleywood, causing the death of her beloved grandfather Nickolas, eleven-year-old Holly O’Flanigan, numb with grief, loses all hope of ever becoming a famous artist like him or of escaping her abusive foster family, the Smoralls. While hiding from them, Holly discovers a secret attic where her grandfather left a decidedly unusual paintbrush and a canvas with the image of a fantasy world — one Holly and three friends literally fall into. The painting is a gateway to the parallel world of Magora, where everything and everyone are created by painting. With her three sidekicks in tow, Holly enrolls in the exciting Cliffony Art Academy, where they learn to weave painting with magic, just as Grandfather Nickolas could. Her hopes of becoming a painter and escaping the Smoralls finally seem to be coming true. Meanwhile, valuable artwork is being stolen from the Gallery of Wonders. As these paintings could provide a portal back to the real world, Holly begins a search for the thief. She believes that the dark Duke of Cuspidor might be the culprit and that he has a spy among the instructors of Cliffony. But Holly’s self-doubt keeps her from making any progress in school, and she struggles to learn the brushstrokes she needs so urgently. They not only bring objects, people, and animals to life, they’re also Holly’s best defense against the dangerous Unfinished — monstrous beings created when an artist leaves a painting incomplete. Like vampires, the Unfinished hunger for the one thing that can flesh out their bodies — blood. And because Holly is a Gindar, an artist with the rare ability to create a brand new species, they want Holly’s blood most of all.
