Growing up we had a family friend who hated Christmas, but his wife loved it with all her heart. I always found that a bit funny because the husband was such a wonderful, fun, loving man, but Christmas just wasn’t his thing. So to compromise he and his wife would alternate each year how they preferred to celebrate the holiday. Every other year the fully decorated Christmas tree would come out of the closet, the lights went out and the candy dishes were filled with ribbon candy. Presents were wrapped with colorful paper and big beautiful bows were carefully placed on top. It was a gorgeous house to visit. Then the next year none of the Christmas cheer would be seen. The only decoration one could find was a sign put on the front door that said “Quarantine”

Asia. Once a high-flying international lawyer, a member of the innermost circles of government power, Jack Shepherd has abandoned the savage politics of Washington for the lethargic backwater of Bangkok, where he is now just an unremarkable professor at an unimportant university in an insignificant city. Or is he? A secretive Asian bank collapses under dubious circumstances. A former law partner Shepherd thought dead reveals himself as the force behind the disgraced bank and coerces Shepherd into helping him track the hundreds of millions of dollars that disappeared in the collapse. A twisting trail of deceit leads Shepherd from Bangkok to Hong Kong and eventually to an isolated villa on the fabled island of Phuket where he confronts the evil at the heart of a monstrous game of international treachery. A lawyer among people who laugh at the law, a friend in a land where today’s allies are tomorrow’s fugitives, Jack Shepherd battles the global tide of corruption, extortion and murder that is fast engulfing the new life he has made for himself in Thailand.

Since being made a full partner in his brother’s ranch, Nate Barker has grown into a savvy businessman, despite the savage taint of his Indian blood. It’s been almost four years since he last saw her, and he hasn’t been able to move on with his life. Now he’s determined to follow Wendy to St. Louis, and figure out if she ever loved him the way he loved — and still loves — her. Wendy Murray thinks she knows all about True Love; after all, she is a successful romance novelist. But life in the big city is more complicated than she expected, and now she has a terrible secret… A secret that’s kept her from going home to Nate. But when he shows up on her doorstep only a few days before Christmas, she knows that she can’t hide any longer. She might know all there is to know about writing romances, but Nate is determined to teach Wendy that “Happily Ever After” isn’t just a phrase out of one of her books. Things can never go back to the way they were… but with a little magic of the Christmas season, maybe they can be even better.

A Book Without Dragons
Olivia Berrier
(22 Reviews)
Genre: Science Fiction

This book contains no dragons. It does, however, contain individuals who Willow Ayers believes would benefit from the addition of some magical creatures. A broken marriage, a failed career, an abusive home: the people around Willow are trapped inside problems so isolating they can only be expressed by constantly changing tenses and writing styles. It is not the sort of book Willow would read; he prefers fantasy novels with consistent styles and happy endings. But this is not a fantasy book, and Willow’s idea to bring about his own ‘happily ever after’ is crumbling. Decades ago, he saw the way humanity relied on so many flawed systems — Internet, GPS, cell phones, electronic banking — and created Unitime, the perfect system to unite all systems. Now his Satellites are malfunctioning, and what seemed an innocent glitch in technology might prove to be something darker, something infinitely more dangerous. Even so, Willow believes people can overcome such things, even though it seems as unlikely as a book that starts in five different writing styles, but ends in just one.
