I am always delighted when I find a way to get great food without having to make it myself. Last week I hit the jackpot when I through a potluck birthday party for my hubby. My partner in crime, who brought the most delicious stew, was shocked and impressed with the stealthiness of which, during the evening, I shoved all the food in the fridge to make room for the dessert on the table. When it was time to go she had asked where her crock-pot with the remaining stew went. Unmoving from in front of the refrigerator I told her I would clean the pot for her and return it Monday. Then I gave her stern look, indicating I was not moving away from the fridge. Her stew is amazing. She would have to tackle me to get it back. That’s the price she pays for being such a great cook. So tonight I have an opportunity to get free crab and unlimited dessert. As I do every year, I volunteer to work my baby basset’s school crab feed fundraiser. All I have to do is work my tushy off for five hours shoveling fresh crab into bowls, freezing my hands off, and getting poked by thousands of little crab legs. At the end of the evening there is usually some crab left over and a table full of desserts. I just bag up what I want!! EASY PEAZY!!

The world has gone to hell and it isn’t coming back.

It happened in a year: starvation, gangs of kids with guns, and every adult in the world dead from the Sickness. Houses are now mausoleums. Civilization lies in the hands of children who’ve never had to feed themselves or survive a winter without gas or electricity. Most will die. Others — a bare few — will tread a different path.

Fourteen-year-old Jack Ferris is a survivor — because his parents raised him that way. Leveraging qualities rare for his age, he must lead his desperate companions to a secret refuge. Too late, he learns that safety is a mirage, and that the high price of hope is paid in blood.

When Sir Humphrey Strange, 8th baronet and squire of Batch Magna departs this world for the Upper House (as he vaguely thought of it, where God no doubt presides in ermine over a Heaven as reassuringly familiar as White’s or Boodle’s), what’s left of his estate passes, through the ancient law of entailment, to distant relative Humph, an amiable, overweight short-order cook from the Bronx.

Sir Humphrey Franklin T Strange, 9th baronet and squire of Batch Magna, as Humph now most remarkably finds himself to be, is persuaded by his Uncle Frank, a small time Wall Street broker, to make a killing by turning the sleepy backwater into a theme-park image of rural England, a playground for the world’s rich.

But while the village pub and shop put out the Stars and Stripes in welcome, the tenants of the estate’s dilapidated houseboats tear up their notices to quit, and led by randy pulp-crime writer Phineas Cook and the one-eyed Lt-Commander James Cunningham, they run up the Union Jack and prepare to engage.
