I am at the point right now that I could start planting plants in the flowerbeds! This is exciting! This is the fun stuff that I have been looking forward to for a long time. I should see first if there will be any danger of frost (boring and responsible) before I go too nuts. I am going to start with the two citrus trees. A few of you had mentioned that I should plant three, not just the two that I had purchased already, but I will be adding three complimentary plants with it to give me the odd number that will balance it out nicely. I was worried after I put the weed-cloth down that there would be too little flowerbed space, but once I really got a clear picture of how big the beds were and how many plants I would need to buy to fill them, all doubt went out the window. I don’t have a picture for you guys this time. I want to wait until there is more significant progress. I am really going to try and get out there after work. Energy permitting!

Someone is keeping watch over the machine. Should it ever have been built?

The lure of the find behind the loose hearthstone at Hazleton House was too great. The schematic excited Evan, Reenie and Ivy for different reasons but it is Kayla who actually begins building it. Her ability to focus to the exclusion of all else is just one of the effects of her Asperger’s.

The scribbled initials E.W. were merely a curiosity until it’s discovered they belong to Eli Whitney. But strange footprints and disturbing visitors let Evan know that the theft of his sister’s prize schematic isn’t just a coincidence.

It becomes obvious that the generator has no apparent power source. And Eli Whitney was only the first to die because of the machine.

Soon they realize their enemies are much bigger than they had imagined and the threat the device poses could topple an empire. The secret now threatens those at Hazleton House.

Who is trying to stop them?

In this latest stand-alone, No. 6 in The Val & Kit Mystery Series, the lifelong friends are vacationing in England. After four days of sightseeing in London, the fiftysomething Val and Kit move on to a rented cottage in the bucolic village of Little Dipping, where Val’s actress daughter, Emily, and son-in-law are temporarily living and where Emily has become involved in community theater. Val and Kit quickly immerse themselves in village life and befriend several locals, including the leader of the Brownie troop, the pub owner and his wife, and a curious eight-year-old named Ivy. They also manage to rub more than one of their new acquaintances the wrong way. Nevertheless, they revel in the English countryside as well as the theatrical activities, despite Val’s ex-husband showing up and some troubling news from back home. The harmony of the village is soon broken, however, by the vicious murder of one of their new friends. The shocking events that follow are only slightly more horrific than one from the past that continues to confound authorities. The crimes threaten to involve Emily, so Val and Kit return to their roles as amateur sleuths, employing their own inimitable ways.
