Those poor bees that I picked up on Saturday are going to think they have been taken to the worst place in the world. Saturday they were ripped from their home and plopped into a strange new land. That pretty much makes for a pretty bad day. Sunday it was so windy they couldn’t even get off the front porch. Monday was bright and sunny, so they were finally able to explore the area. Okay, things were looking up. Don’t get too comfy ladies. Last night was a very chilly 35 degrees. I hope you guys had extra bee blankets. I am hoping for a nice sunny day for them to go out foraging. They have lasted two years without being helped, so lets just hope that makes them strong enough to make it through the winter. Winters here aren’t so bad though. No snow, and there must be some pollen around because my original colony has been pretty successful. I see them coming back from foraging with pretty big pollen pants. I don’t believe in crossing my fingers, but I might make an exception in this case.

The Vanishing Woman
by Doug Peterson
4.8 Stars (7 Reviews)
Genre: Historical Fiction | Literature & Fiction | African American

FREE for a limited time

Ellen Craft escaped from slavery in 1848 by posing as a white man, while her husband William pretended to be her slave. They took trains and steamboats north, escaping in plain view. When other passengers looked at her, they saw only an ailing planter from Georgia. Ellen Craft had vanished.

Ellen’s mother was a slave, but her father was her master, and she had skin as white as his. This enabled her to pose as a white man, in one of the boldest escapes in American history. The Vanishing Woman is based on a true story — an escape driven by the desire for freedom and family. William and Ellen decided they would not have children until they were free.
Their incredible story riveted a nation, and the couple put the Fugitive Slave Law to its first major test, bringing attention to their plight all of the way to the White House. The ultimate irony: This vanishing woman became one of the most visible symbols of freedom in nineteenth-century America.

They ran 1,000 miles to freedom and changed the country forever.

by Leland Shanle
4.1 Stars (115 Reviews)
Genre: Literature & Fiction | Thrillers | War

FREE for a limited time

Action explodes from the pages of Novelist LC Shanle’s second book in the Aviator Series. World War II experienced from the cockpits of fighter aircraft, and through the eyes of men trapped in island Tropical Hells. Written by a retired Naval Aviator and former Paratrooper; the author puts the reader in the F-4F Wildcat and jungle, as warriors engage in a titanic struggle around the globe.
A diverse and rich cast of characters reveal the sacrifice and frustrations of war. A no holds bar accounting of the actual battles, shown through the eyes of the novels characters, uncovers mistakes and even incompetence at the highest levels. Vengeance shows the disastrous results of these decisions, on the lowest common denominator; the war fighter. Closely following the actual battles of Midway and Guadalcanal the reader gets an insider’s view so vivid the smell of cordite will hang in the air.
A rare perspective written by an author that flew modern fighters over the historic battlefields, even from the decks of aircraft carriers that fought in the Pacific. A riveting story, Vengeance tells of the impact at an individual level, a personal level; of an entire world at war. From the struggles of a young man in Officer Candidate School facing down a sadistic Drill Instructor; to entire fleets engaging in War At Sea.
Vengeance will pull back the curtain of historical perspective and frame it in reality. The harsh reality will come as a shock to readers who have read of great victories. But know little of the tremendous cost; like fifteen hundred sailors lost in a single nights battle, all five of the Sullivan brothers among them.
To the soldier, sailor or airman: war is about the small unit they are a part of and the struggle not only to stay alive, but protect their comrades. Sometimes, even to avenge their deaths.

The Bright Side of Smartphones: Improving communication within the family using your mobile
by Liat Zelzer
4.9 Stars (19 Reviews)
Genre: Computers & Technology

FREE for a limited time

Take advantage of the smartphone to strengthen your relationship with your child.
Slightly over a decade has elapsed since Steve Jobs unveiled a new, exciting, and intriguing product, developed by Apple — the first smartphone. We have since been living through a social revolution that has changed the way we communicate with one another, including within our own families.

During working hours, parents and children talk mostly about routine matters like the day’s events or whether they have done their homework, but the emotional component, so critical to a family, is missing.

Today, creating that emotional connection is one of the most important challenges parents face with.

After years of treating children and offering parenting advice, Liat Zelzer is convinced that children will respond happily to emotional communication conveyed by technological means. If done properly, this can go beyond the technical issues of the day and transmit feelings of warmth between family members when they are not in the same physical space.

In her book, Liat presents common situations in family life where parents are at work and wish to provide their children with support, help, or be part of their experiences, while also ensuring their wellbeing remotely. Through real-life examples from parents, Liat shows useful solutions through the use of a smartphone. This book suggests a broad range of ways of creating communication that bring families closer by showing the true potential rather than the downside usually attributed to this technology, in order to promote and aid our family goals.
