Today I am taking my baby bassets to a water park to cool down from this wonderful heat we are having. They are both teenagers, one even has his driver license, and yet they still choose to hang out with me? FUN! I must be super fun and exciting. It certainly isn’t my cooking that’s keeping them around.

Journalist Dennis Kaatsay has always taken in the unique beauty of northern New Mexico as if it were oxygen made visible. A native son, from one of the centuries-old Indian pueblos that endure in the Land of Enchantment, he’s always felt sustained by the colors, light and lines — the brilliant yellow of cottonwoods in autumn, the violet sky at dawn, sunlight glinting on the surface of the Chama River, mesa tops and mountain ridges where earth and sky meet. Then three bodies are found hanging from trees and a fourth so savagely beaten the forensic experts can’t agree on key facts. The brutal deaths make it hard for Dennis to see anything as he once did. And they drive him to look for answers.
