Every year I do The Purge. I walk around the house and clear out items I know I don’t need, never use, or just don’t like anymore. For me it’s hard to get started, but once I get going it feels quite freeing. Like a huge weight is being lifted off my shoulders. After a week or so of that though it gets to be a bit of an addiction. I go through and do a second or third round judging every little object in my house. Do you bring me joy? SPEAK UP LITTLE BOWL! Don’t worry, the bowl does not respond. ….Yet. I am just about to hit my fourth round which means the baby bassets are about to go back to school. Every year I do this. It’s just plain weird.

Patrolling the Heart of the West: True Tales of a Nevada State Trooper
by Steve Raabe
(624 Reviews)
Genre: Biographies & Memoirs
FREE for a limited time
For decades, Trooper Steve Raabe patrolled some of the most desolate and dangerous highways in America. Alone in the remote Nevada desert, miles from any backup, Raabe was forced to contend with murderers, thieves, perverts, dope peddlers, and the occasional runaway train.
While often tragic and terrifying, Raabe’s true tales also abound with his signature wit and playful good cheer. Policing can be a deadly serious business, but for Raabe it also entailed buying a prisoner an ice cream cone on a hot summer day, or laughing along with some good old boys before booking them into jail, as you’ll discover in Patrolling the Heart of the West.
In our contentious and politicized era, when police officers are too often portrayed as either infallible superheroes or oppressive henchmen, Raabe’s charming collection reminds us that cops are mostly just ordinary men and women who’ve chosen an extraordinary career.

Who is the “Mom on the Run?”
If you’re a mom, that person is likely YOU. Next to home – and maybe work – the single location where many of us spend the next largest chunk of our time is in our vehicles.
And while we often take time to prepare for emergencies at home, we rarely have the same semblance of preparedness when we get into our car, van, or truck and leave.
In Mom on the Run, I’ll walk you through the creation of your own step-by-step plan which will effortlessly have your most needed items at your fingertips whether you’re at the playground, in a store, or out with a friend.
Get lost in a less-than-desirable area of town, Mom on the Run discusses keeping your family safe both in and out of your vehicle. Stuck at the doctor’s office or at the DMV and the kids are climbing the walls? Mom on the Run has suggestions. Preventing, containing, and/or cleaning up from motion sickness accidents? Mom on the Run’s got you covered.
You’ll get guided, simple, step-by-step instructions including:
• Nine questions to ask yourself to build your own effective and personal Everyday Carry (EDC).
• How to evaluate the items you want to include in your EDC.
• How to decide when it’s time to upgrade those items and when you should leave well enough alone.
You’ll learn…
• how to set up your vehicle with family-specific emergency preparedness kits that you’ll economically put together to seamlessly cover all of your family’s needs for when you’re around town.
• necessary changes to make to your vehicle kits to equip them for summer and for winter.
• which extras you need to be prepared for longer trips away from home.
• how to organize your vehicle preparedness kit so that you can find anything that you need at a moment’s notice.
You’ll also…
• Learn the single most overlooked Everyday Carry tool.
• Garner alternate ways of communicating with loved ones during an emergency when you can’t use your phone to make a call.
• Discover the strongest, most compact cordage that you can carry. Hint – it’s not paracord.
• Identify the most effective, condensed, and easy-to-access way to carry quantities of OTCs in your bag.
• Determine which highly effective protection tool you are never without – and no, it’s not your keys or your concealed firearm.
• Master this simple trick that will allow you to always know where to find every piece in your everyday carry items that you need.
If you’re a woman into preparedness, you’ve likely prepared your home for life’s emergencies, but you need to prepare your own person with everyday carry essentials for women. You should prep your “around town van” with items that you may need while you’re on the go. If you’re looking for one of the best prepper books of 2023, look no further than Mom on the Run.
