Under Betrayal (Battleground Vietnam Book 4)
by Eric Meyer
4.4 Stars (206 Reviews)
Genre:

Under Betrayal is an incredible and fictional story based loosely on the war in South Vietnam. A story of brave, tough soldiers fighting for their lives in the dense, hostile Vietnamese jungle. Often hindered by dubious and sometimes corrupt decisions from Washington.

A senior officer arrives at Tan Son Nhut, outside Saigon, South Vietnam, to take command of Army CID. A sleek, smooth-talking lawyer who made his bones in the JAG, the Judge Advocate General’s department. He hands Warrant Officer Carl Yeager a new assignment. To locate a group of murderous American deserters responsible for numerous raids on army convoys and remote bases to steal supplies, weapons and explosives. The morale inside MACV has plummeted to a low level, with soldiers never knowing who is their real enemy.

Yeager is suspicious from the start. His orders are merely to find them and call in their location, with no plan for these men to submit to military justice. Instead the brass has plans to send in a squadron of fighter-bombers to dump several tons of ordnance on their heads to wipe them out. Which may solve the problem, but without supplying any answers. Who are these men, and why are they attacking American soldiers? Is there some deeper motive? Or is it possible someone is lying?

Warrant Officer Yeager and Ranger Sergeant Ray Massey head to their last known location. They ran into the deserters and narrowly escape with their lives. But something is wrong. The men they encounter are skilled soldiers from all sides in the conflict, US Army, ARVN and North Vietnamese Army, the NVA. They also have an agenda, to fight the war for personal gain rather than loyalty to their flag. Except one, the mysterious ‘Colonel,’ who has a different agenda. An agenda that could explode the war into a new and even more deadly conflict. A full-length novel by the bestselling author of many Spec Ops books. These include the popular SEAL Team Bravo stories, Heroes of Afghanistan, Raider, Echo Six, and Devil’s Guard titles.

“The Open Boat” is a short story by American author Stephen Crane. First published in 1897, it was based on Crane’s experience of surviving a shipwreck off the coast of Florida earlier that year while traveling to Cuba to work as a newspaper correspondent. Crane was stranded at sea for thirty hours when his ship sank after hitting a sandbar. He and three other men were forced to navigate their way to shore in a small boat. Crane’s personal account of the shipwreck and the men’s survival, titled “Stephen Crane’s Own Story”, was first published a few days after his rescue. Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and poet who is often called the first modern American writer. Crane was a correspondent in the Greek-Turkish War and the Spanish American War, penning numerous articles, war reports and sketches. In addition to six novels, Crane wrote over a hundred short stories including “The Blue Hotel,” “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky,” and “The Open Boat.”
