Usually I try to put down my phone at least thirty minutes before I turn the lights off to go to sleep and ignore any beeps and chirps my phone makes. Last night however I did not ignore the text alert and grabbed my phone to read it, just in case. It was a text from the city messaging system, and it read, “Fourth suspect in the home invasion/murder case was picked up today.” Umm… Great, awesome job guys. Could you possibly tell me if this was the fourth out of four people? Info like that is kinda important right before I go to sleep. Would be nice to know if I need to sleep with one eye open. They actually caught the guy in the afternoon, and I understand that they need to get all their info right and stuff before they go sending out mass texts. That text would have been appreciated more around dinnertime. Would have made for interesting conversation over pork chops. As it was though, I did not sleep well last night.

Jane of Lantern Hill: classic
by L. M. Montgomery
(86 Reviews)
Genre: Historical Fiction
FREE for a limited time
Once, when Jane had been sitting in the Cadillac, one dark, dingy morning in a snowy world, waiting for Frank to take her to St. Agatha’s, as he did every day, she had heard two women, who were standing on the street-corner, talking about it. “Did you ever see such a dead house?” said the younger. “It looks as if it had been dead for ages.” “That house died thirty years ago, when Robert Kennedy died,” said the older woman. “Before that it was a lively place. Nobody in Toronto entertained more. Robert Kennedy liked social life. He was a very handsome, friendly man. People could never understand how he came to marry Mrs. James Anderson… a widow with three children. She was Victoria Moore to begin with, you know, old Colonel Moore’s daughter… a very aristocratic family. But she was pretty as a picture then and was she crazy about him! My dear, she worshipped him. People said she was never willing to let him out of her sight for a moment. And they said she hadn’t cared for her first husband at all. Robert Kennedy died when they had been married about fifteen years… died just after his first baby was born, I’ve heard.” “Does she live all alone in that castle?” “Oh, no. Her two daughters live with her. One of them is a widow or something… and there’s a granddaughter, I believe. They say old Mrs. Kennedy is a terrible tyrant, but the younger daughter… the widow… is gay enough and goes to everything you see reported in Saturday Evening. Very pretty… and can she dress! She was the Kennedy one and took after her father. She must hate having all her fine friends coming to Gay Street. It’s worse than dead… it’s decayed. But I can remember when Gay Street was one of the most fashionable residential streets in town. Look at it now.”

Antarctic Tears: Determination, adversity, and the pursuit of a dream at the bottom of the world
by Aaron Linsdau
(125 Reviews)
Genre: Sports | Travel
FREE for a limited time
Emotions run high in this true polar adventure. It’s a story of triumph, harrowing danger, and outright adventure. In 2012, Aaron Linsdau left his entire life behind.
Gone was the engineering career. He told his family and girlfriend that he wanted to pursue a dream to do something no other American had ever accomplished. He wanted to be the first to ski from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back without aid or support. Alone.
The journey to the South Pole covers over 700 miles through the most forbidding frozen terrain on the planet. The temperature is always below zero and gale force winds routinely roar across the ice. The polar plateau is devoid of life. There are no plants, animals, or insects. Antarctica provides no shelter, no protection, and is unforgiving of any mistake.
But before the expedition was to start, there was much to do. Linsdau trekked 100 miles across the Greenland tundra. He skied across Yellowstone in the winter, camping in -45 degree temperatures. Towing tires up mountains and eating 4000 calories a day was preparation for Antarctica.
Previous expeditions have lost tents, helplessly watching them blow over the horizon. Many explorers have quit or been rescued. What began as a brave adventure into the unknown turned into a battle for survival.
Linsdau takes the reader to Antarctica. They experience incredible storms, skiing blind through whiteouts, crossing invisible crevasses, and skirting disaster. The book shows what happened every day of the expedition.
The air is cold enough to freeze water in seconds and cause frostbite in minutes. Only outer space is less hospitable. Driven by passion, he sacrifices nearly everything to make his dream come true. This is a story about personal discovery, testing the limits of human endurance, total dedication to achieving a goal, and never giving up even when both body and equipment fail.
There were many surprises during Aaron Linsdau’s expedition to the South Pole… Antarctic Tears is also available as an audiobook in a 9CD box set or as MP3 files on a USB thumb drive.
Linsdau speaks about this extraordinary experience to audiences world-wide.
